The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) established six core objectives or skills area designed to be introduced and reinforced throughout the Core Curriculum. The Texas Administrative Code states that through “the Texas Core Curriculum, students will prepare for contemporary challenges by developing and demonstrating the following core objectives:
- Critical Thinking Skills
- Communication Skills
- Empirical and Quantitative Skills
- Personal Responsibility
- Social Responsibility
The THECB also issued guidelines to institutions for the assessment of these core objectives across the Component Areas:
For example, classes in Component Area 030 – Life and Physical Sciences are REQUIRED to assess Communication, Critical Thinking, Empirical and Quantitative Skills, and Teamwork but Social Responsibility and Personal Responsibility are OPTIONAL when it comes to assessment.
Through 2016 and 2017 LeapTX’s Faculty Fellows will be exploring what’s happening across Texas when it comes to the integration of these core objectives into teaching, learning and assessment. If you are interested in sharing your experiences of working with these core objectives visit our Core Objective pages to find out more.
